Build a Fishing Rod

It’s easy to find an inexpensive rod and reel at a local tackle shop or hardware store.  But what can you do if you forget your rod at home?  Follow Boppa’s simple instructions to make your own rod with a few basic supplies.

 Fishing Rod

What you’ll need:

  • willow or bamboo branch
  • 6-12 lb fishing line
  • pruning saw – Ask an adult for help!

Here are some simple tips for getting you started:

Catch and release:

This is the practice of releasing the fish you do not want to eat back into the water so they can grow big and be there next time you want to go fishing.

Tackle techniques:

When fishing with a bobber and sinker with live bait, place the sinker approximately 9" above the hook. Then place the bobber or float approximately 18" to 24" above the sinker. If you are fishing in deeper water, the bobber may need to be moved further up the line from the sinker.

Safety tips:

Always fish with an adult or friend.

Watch the weather - lightning is not your friend when you are on the water.

Life jacket - Wear a personal flotation device.

Get swimming lessons; if you are going to fish, learn to swim!

Always let someone know where you are going to be fishing and when you will be back from your adventure.

Now that you have a new rod you are going to need a bobber and bait. Check out the Collecting worms activity and how to create a bobber out of cork. You will be all set with your Free AndyCamper activity card in hand. Let’s get out side and try something new…
