Plants

Discover It

See how plants can grow on you

Plants are made up of lots of different kinds of parts.  Stems grow and make the plant tall or short, flowers bloom and give birds and insects food, and seeds fall to the ground to make new plants. Some plants are very tall and others are pretty short and creep along the ground. People and animals also depend on plants for food, shelter, shade and lots of other stuff.

The next time you’re exploring outdoors, look closer at the plants around you and see what they’re really made of.  Are there lots of leaves or only a few of them?  Are they round and bushy or tall and slim? Are there flowers or berries?  Does the plant climb up high or creep along the ground?

Check out the plants on the right of this page and see what makes them special.  Most of them can be found just about anywhere in North America.

Andy’s Tips for exploring:

  • Never taste any part of a plant, including roots, leaves, flowers and berries unless an expert adult says it’s okay.
  • Some plants are poisonous even if you just touch them.  Check out Andy’s list on the right of this page to learn about plants that you should avoid including, Poison Ivy and Nettles.
